About Khulisa
Khulisa is a Zulu word which means “to cause to grow/to nurture/to expand”. As South African actors, theatre makers and teachers, this word inspired us to form a drama company that seeks to teach, train and coach people of all ages, helping them grow in confidence, nurture their creativity and expand their skills.
Drama builds confidence in who we are and what we can offer the world, but it also develops empathy and interest in one another; building in us a concern not only for ourselves but for those we share the world with as well.
“Khulisa” is a verb. And so, we run Holiday Clubs, Drama Clubs, Coaching Sessions and Workshops for kids, teens and adults, all with the goal of expanding, nurturing and growing the people in our community.

Our Mission
We are committed to serving our local community and the community at large by using drama to help people of all ages grow in their confidence, nurture their creativity and expand their skills.

Grow confidence
From playing games that encourage children to say their names with pride, to leading a group of teenagers through exercises that enable them to shake off inhibitions and speak boldly in front of a group, to facilitating a team-building workshop that helps adults in a corporate environment collaborate and work together, growing confidence is something we at Khulisa are passionate about.

Nurture creativity
We believe that everyone has creativity within them. Creativity is more than singing, dancing and acting; we use creativity in problem-solving, invention and critical thinking. It takes creativity to view situations in a unique way, but that creativity needs to be nurtured in order to be used to its full potential. At Khulisa, all the exercises, teaching materials and resources we use are specifically chosen to nurture our natural creativity in a fun and engaging way, while providing the tools to fan those creative embers into great imaginative flames.

Expand skills
For those who engage with it, Drama provides many lifelong skills. Effective communication and public speaking; vocal projection and diction; feeling comfortable in one’s body; spatial and social awareness; empathy and cultural awareness; memory skills; physical aptitude and fitness; multi-tasking and creative problem-solving are just some of the many skills drama exercises help develop. Then, of course, for those interested in a career in the performing arts, there are specific Acting, Movement and Voice techniques that can be honed at Khulisa, expanding one’s skillset even more.
